5 Things I’m Doing Differently This Pregnancy (That Are Making a Huge Difference!)

Katie Lyke | Austin Lifestyle Newborn, Family, and Branding Photographer

Pregnancy is such a unique journey, and with this being my second time around, I’ve found myself making some intentional changes that are helping me feel more balanced, rested, and prepared. If you're expecting—or hope to be someday—here are five things I’m doing differently this pregnancy that have been total game-changers!

1. Listening to My Body & Taking Rest Days

During my first pregnancy, I was determined to stick to a rigorous workout schedule, pushing through exhaustion because I felt like I should keep going. This time? I’m giving myself permission to rest. While I still love moving my body, I’m honoring what it needs—whether that’s a gentle walk, a stretching session, or a full-on nap instead of a workout. Growing a baby is hard work, and I’m embracing the balance between movement and rest.

2. Prioritizing My Morning & Evening Routines

Creating consistent routines has been a game-changer for my mental clarity and overall well-being. My morning routine sets the tone for the day with quiet time for devotionals and prayer, journaling, and organizing my to-do list. In the evening, my closing duties include making sure the kitchen is reset (dishes in the dishwasher, table wiped down), enjoying a high-protein snack (hello, yogurt, frozen fruit, mini chocolate chips, and whipped cream!), and actually reading before bed instead of mindlessly scrolling or staying on my laptop too late. These small but meaningful habits help me feel grounded and in control amidst all the changes happening in my body and life.

3. Ditching the Scale (Thanks to My Six-Year-Old!)

In my first pregnancy, I found myself hyper-focused on the numbers, constantly checking my weight at home. This time, I’ve let that go—partly by choice, partly because our bathroom scale met an untimely end in a bathtub tsunami courtesy of my six-year-old! Now, I only weigh in at my doctor’s appointments, and it’s been freeing. Instead of fixating on numbers, I’m tuning into how I feel and making choices based on what my body needs.

4. Taking More Bump Photos—Even When I Don’t Feel “Photo-Ready”

As a newborn photographer, I know how priceless photos are, yet in my first pregnancy, I barely documented my bump. This time, I’m snapping more pictures, even when I don’t feel my best. Because here’s the truth: we won’t remember every little detail, but we will cherish the images that bring us back to this fleeting season. If you’re pregnant, take the photo—future you will be grateful!

5. Prepping Meals & Snacks for the Fourth Trimester

One of the best gifts I can give myself postpartum is a stocked freezer. I’ve been slowly prepping and freezing meals and snacks so that when baby arrives, I won’t have to think about what’s for dinner (or lunch… or a 3 AM snack). Knowing that I’ll have nourishing, easy-to-grab options ready to go is bringing me so much peace of mind.

Final Thoughts

This pregnancy, I’m learning to extend more grace to myself, lean into rest, and create rhythms that serve me well. Whether it’s your first pregnancy or your fourth, I hope these insights inspire you to find what makes your journey smoother and more joy-filled!

If you’re expecting and looking to document this special season, I’d love to help you capture it! As an Austin-based newborn photographer specializing in natural, joy-filled imagery, I believe in preserving these fleeting moments in a way that feels true to you. Let’s connect and create something beautiful together!
